Cognitive Behavioral Therapy - CBT
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is an evidence-based psychotherapeutic method that focuses on the connection between thoughts, feelings and behaviours. It is based on the idea that our thoughts and interpretations of events influence our feelings and actions. The goal of CBT is to identify and challenge negative or dysfunctional thought patterns to create positive changes in feelings and behaviors.
In CBT, the therapist works together with the client to examine and understand the thoughts and beliefs that may be harmful or hindering. By challenging and reformulating these thoughts, one strives to create more realistic and constructive approaches. At the same time, CBT focuses on changing behaviors by introducing and reinforcing positive and healthy behavior patterns.
CBT is used successfully to treat a range of mental health conditions, including anxiety, depression, phobias, post-traumatic stress disorder, and various types of obsessive-compulsive disorder. Its structured and targeted approach makes it a popular and effective form of therapy. The sessions are usually time-limited and focus on concrete goals to promote long-term change and well-being.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy - ACT
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a form of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) that focuses on increasing psychological flexibility through acceptance and commitment. Instead of fighting or eliminating unwanted thoughts and feelings, ACT teaches people to accept them while focusing on living a meaningful life in line with one's values.
Central concepts in ACT include:
-
Acceptance: Being open and accepting what is without trying to change or suppress unpleasant feelings or thoughts. It is about creating an open and accepting attitude towards the present moment.
-
Cognitive defusion: Distancing oneself from and observing thoughts instead of being completely absorbed by them. This helps reduce the fusion between thoughts and one's identity.
-
Presence: Being present and aware of the current moment instead of getting stuck in the past or worrying about the future. Mindfulness and conscious presence are central aspects of ACT.
-
Values-driven commitment: Identifying one's core values and using them as a guide to make decisions and commitments that lead to a meaningful and rich life.
-
Commitment: To actively engage in behaviors that are in line with one's values, even if it may mean facing difficulties or discomfort.
ACT has been shown to be effective for a variety of psychological problems, including anxiety, depression, stress, and chronic pain. By promoting psychological flexibility, ACT helps individuals create a more open and adaptive relationship with their own thoughts and feelings as they strive to live a meaningful life.
Sleep counseling and treatment of insomnia
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is an evidence-based form of therapy that is often used to treat various forms of mental health problems, including sleep problems. When it comes to sleep difficulties, CBT focuses on identifying and changing negative thought patterns and behaviors that can affect sleep.
A central part of CBT for sleep problems is to explore and challenge thoughts and beliefs that may contribute to sleep difficulties. It may include dealing with anxiety, negative expectations, or excessive focus on sleep. The therapist works with the client to identify and challenge these thought patterns and replace them with more realistic and balanced thoughts.
Another important component is behavioral techniques. This may mean establishing a consistent sleep routine, limiting activities in bed to sleep only, and avoiding stimulating activities before bedtime. By making these changes, one can improve sleep quality and establish healthier sleep habits.
In summary, CBT focuses on addressing both thoughts and behaviors that can negatively affect sleep. It is a structured and targeted form of therapy that has been shown to be effective in treating sleep problems and improving overall mental health.
